Upgrading Acer Aspire 3680 Notebook’s Processor to Core 2 Duo

April 26, 2008

Is it possible? YES, it is possible and have been proved succes.

I, my self also have upgraded my Acer 3680 processor to T5500 Intel Core 2 Duo (SL9SH) 1.6Ghz 2Mb L2 Cache FSB 667 Mhz.

ACER Aspire 3680 is the cheapest notebook in Aspire series which produced around mid 2006 up to beginning of 2007.
Brand new price was around USD 499 and now you can get it only for USD 398 at Walmart -CLEARANCE SALE

The forum had been a long list, so to be simple just follow these summarized steps:

  1. Make sure that your notebook is having intel 943 GML, if you want to upgrade to Intel core duo or Intel Core 2 Duo Processors.
As I understand, Aspire 3680 motherboard was produced using two kinds of intel Calligosta chipsets :
    i940 GML and i943 GML.
How to find out the chipset type? There are two ways:First way, take apart your laptop (almost 95%) then check out the chipset type. To open/ disassemble your laptop follow the guide here.
After you take apart the heatsink of the chipset, use flash light to see the writing on the chipset die. (NOT NECESSARY TO DRAW THE BLACK FILM)Second way, which is easier
Open the lid that close your memory comparment. There are only 2 screw needed to be opened. Then look at the sticker on your memory compartment
Take a look at the sticker (where your motherboard code is written there):
If your motherboard code is started with MB.AZL06.xxx then your chipset is i943GML.
If your motherboard code is started with MB.TEB06.xxx then your chipset is i940GML
  2. Make sure your BIOS version is V13505 which support Core 2 Duo. How to upgrade the BIOS? Click here.
  3. Upgrade the processor to :T5200, T5300, T5500, T5600
